  • Agile Development: Dare to Fail
IT works hard to succeed in its development projects and still gets it wrong a lot of the time, but it's not a joke to say that maybe IT should adopt the method of trying to fail instead.

  • Talking the Talk
Communication is the common medium through which all collaboration moves. We think we know how to communicate, but maybe we don’t, and maybe thinking we do is our greatest hindrance to success.

This is the key point, not that people communicate but that there is also a learning process in each environment or situation for the optimal way in which to communicate. What’s allowed in war and Hell’s Kitchen may not work in the lab or the classroom, but each scene has its best way to talk.

  • Agile Process Agile Product
Process and product are indivisible. They say you don’t want to watch the process of politics or sausage making, and software development may run close to this sometimes too, but the fact is that you know the tree by its fruit. Process and product are indivisible, with each the perfect mirror of the other.

Exposing the processes by which Dovetail’s software is created has been held to be an admirable thing, but it stems not so much from nobility as from the overarching desire to get it right. All that matters is to build the best for the customer. The greater the light of day the process can be exposed to, the more chance for the perfect ideas to fall into the mix.

  • The Visionary CIO
The opportunity and challenge facing technologists today is to realize that essentially all business process is now aided by technology, even to the highest levels of strategic planning. The role of technology is increasingly symbiotic with the role of human judgment and thinking. Thus it is that the constituency of IT embraces all the decision points of the whole enterprise, and the presence of the CIO is really everywhere.

CIOs need to retrain and enlarge the scope of their thinking to match the scale of the CEO. It is not an exaggeration to say that CIOs should become visionary.

  • Heroic IT
Some IT departments will shrink in the coming years, replaced by services business managers can comprehend and measure. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Some IT departments will transform themselves into businesses, and grow larger and stronger, playing heroic roles in helping to lead their companies to success. This will happen because the nature of the enterprise itself is changing, not just IT.
